East Point Mayor Takes Action to Increase Property Tax Rates

Reports have just resurfaced that Mayor Pittman has requested the City’s Tax Department to submit the financial information to move forward with her recommendation to remove the property tax limit from the City Charter. This is something that first came up at the now infamous Town Hall meeting in which the Mayor created a hostile environment by speaking down to citizens and not producing documentation to back her argument.

  1. Many of us East Point citizens are barely hanging on as it is. Property taxes are based on property VALUE! Property has declined significantly and most of us are upside down in our home loans now. You onlyhave to look at what homes are selling for in East Point to know that’s what market value is. So the behavior of bad decision making and irrational choices made by inadqueate and inept leadership to raise our taxes has to STOP! It’s nothing but illegal since the vlaue of property has fallen. We need garbage service, recycling service, POLICE PROTECTION, elderly services, library and a good fire dept. One of the recomendations is to get rid of police officers when EP is already a crime-ridden hell hole now. Really this is poor planning.
Here’s what we DO NOT need; a city manager making close to $200,000 per year, new buildings (East Point has more empty buildings than I have ever seen anywhere) council members having SECRET ILLEGAL meetings or a tax increase. Believe me EP has already lost population and many more would leave if we could get enough out of our homes to go elsewhere. Poor leadership will cause college educated people and small business people to leave. WHO is going to pay your taxes then? Mayor Pittman and Council you can’t keep trying to squeeze blood money out of citizens that just do NOT have it.
