A moment for Boston

All of us at Your Guy for That and Intown Focus Realty wish to extend our deepest heartfelt sympathy to the families, friends, and loved ones of the recent Boston Marathon tragedy.

There is no words, no gesture, and no thing can take the biting sting from loss; and only the honestly offered hand in wanting to help can be shown to help ease this painful path.

We ask all who wish to help in some small way, look to donate through your local Red Cross Disaster Teams, as they struggle to assist those in Boston. The link below will take you to their national donation website.

Should you buy a fixer-upper?

A battle-tested renovator offers some hard-won advice on choosing a suitable
house and knowing whether you’re really up to the task.

Fixer-upper (noun). A home you purchase at a reasonable price, but one that requires an unreasonable amount of money in repairs and renovations.

OK, so I made up that definition, and it’s not always true. Buying fixer-uppers can get you more house than you would normally be able to afford at a reasonable price. They can be pleasantly inexpensive. But they can also be money pits, masquerading behind a façade of charming woodwork and arched doorways.

As tempting as the purchase price can be for houses that need a little TLC, you must assess whether a fixer-upper is right for you. To do that, you need an appraisal. And I’m not just t… Continue Reading Should you buy a fixer-upper?

DID YOU KNOW?…
Question:  Can I use house plants to improve my home’s indoor air quality?

Asked by Tom of Indiana

There is data and research on the value of outdoor plantings and the positive effect on air quality through natural transpiration. It would seem that the same would be true of indoor plants, if well maintained, both in terms of overall humidity levels, and in terms of potential CO2 reduction and bio-filtration.

Answer

Answered by: Richard Heller of New Rochelle, NY – Greener by Design

NASA did a study in conjunction with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA, now PLANET, the Professional Landcare Network) that showed that yes,

indoor plants not only absorb CO2 and release oxygen, but they also

Cork: Nature’s Gift to Flooring… yes I said “Cork”

By Janice Howell, vice president, MODA Floors & Interiors

Cork flooring has been enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Many people think cork is a relatively new and possibly unreliable flooring option. Yet, you can find examples of cork floors that were installed over 100 years ago in buildings.

Cork is an environmentally sound product. It also is a rapidly renewable resource.

Cork is actually the bark of the Cork Oak, which grows primarily in Portugal. Cork can only be harvested by hand to prevent harming the tree. No trees are cut down to harvest the bark, and cork trees produce new cork for re-harvest every nine years. A single cork tree can be harvested more than 20 times during its 250- to 300-year lifespan.

Atlanta energy-efficient building challenge spreads fast

By Greg Bluestein of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

With many construction crews on the sidelines and few major projects on the horizon, city officials are backing an effort to put them back to work by retrofitting Atlanta’s aging office buildings to make them more energy-efficient.

Atlanta’s Better Buildings Challenge was launched about a year ago. Since then, the voluntary program has grown to include about 70 buildings with 48 million square feet of space — that’s about the size of 48 malls — aiming to be more energy-efficient. The goal of the project, organized by the federal Department of Energy, is to reduce energy and water consumption by 20 percent by 2020.

“We’ve got a lot of plumbers and others sitting on the bench waiting for the economy … Continue Reading Atlanta energy-efficient building challenge spreads fast

Fulton County School Board: Reject the proposal to acquire homes for East Point School!

Petition by Jenny Stone, East Point, GeorgiaPetitioning President, Fulton County School Board Friends,

Light Bulb Differences

Starting in 2012 there will be new mandated efficiency for all light bulbs. No one type of bulb will be banned, but all types must have higher energy standards. here are a few differences between the three most common types of light bulbs.

New Energy Saving Incandescent – The same type as traditional incandescent bulbs, but with new improvements that reduce energy consumption by 25% and last 3 times longer

CFLs – Compact Fluorescent Lamps have a 75% energy savings over standard bulbs and usually have a “curly” shape. they can last 10 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs and can pay for themselves in as little as 9 months.

LEDs – Light Emitting Diode bulbs are becoming more commonplace. LED bulbs sue even less energy than CFLs and have a much more pleasant light quality. More… Continue Reading Light Bulb Differences

Should You Have Your Foundation or Crawlspace Insulated

Homes are becoming more energy efficient due to advancements in building materials. One of these materials, insulation, is being used in ways that optimize its ability to keep out moisture and reduce heat loss. A lot of times the foundation is neglected when the home is insulated, but it should always be included in a home energy savings plan.
When you have a full basement, crawl space or slab on grade home, your home’s energy efficiency can be greatly increased by foundation insulation. For instance, on a full basement, up to 50% of a home’s heat loss can occur through an un-insulated foundation.
Having an insulated foundation not only reduces heating costs, but i can reduce moisture issues, increase comfort and turn a basement into a livable area. It is a commonly forgotten piece of a fu… Continue Reading Should You Have Your Foundation or Crawlspace Insulated
