East Point Mayor Takes Action to Increase Property Tax Rates

Reports have just resurfaced that Mayor Pittman has requested the City’s Tax Department to submit the financial information to move forward with her recommendation to remove the property tax limit from the City Charter. This is something that first came up at the now infamous Town Hall meeting in which the Mayor created a hostile environment by speaking down to citizens and not producing documentation to back her argument.

Sign the Petition and SAY NO TO PROPERTY TAX INCREASE
Your Guy for That, Dustin Drabot will stay up to date on these new developments to raise property tax rates in East Point. If you are not familiar with how the Mayor has been threatening to raise property taxes since the new council took office in January please review some of these earlier posts:

Open House Etiquette for Homebuyers

Basic do’s and don’ts to follow at an open house
You’re driving home leisurely on a Sunday afternoon when suddenly your wife turns down the radio and points, “Look, there’s an open house. Let’s stop and take a look.” Is it all right to drop by if you’re not interested in buying the property? What if you just want to get an idea of prices in the area and chat with a real estate agent? What are the basics of open house etiquette? The idea of an open house is to enable real estate agents to expose a property to potential buyers and hopefully turn those prospective buyers into clients. The house is open not only to potential buyers, but also to people in the neighborhood in the hope that they will sing the praises of the home to their friends, family co-workers or acquaintances who might cons… Continue Reading Open House Etiquette for Homebuyers

Housing Affordability Index Hits Record High

Housing affordability conditions have reached the highest level since recordkeeping began in 1970, according to the National Association of Realtors®.
NAR’s Housing Affordability Index rose to a record high 206.1 in January, based on the relationship between median home price, median family income and average mortgage interest rate. The higher the index, the greater the household purchasing power.
An index of 100 is defined as the point where a median-income household has exactly enough income to qualify for the purchase of a median-priced existing single-family home, assuming a 20 percent downpayment and 25 percent of gross income devoted to mortgage principal and interest payments. For first-time buyers making small downpayments, the affordability levels are relatively lower.

Guided Tour of Connally Nature Park this Saturday

Gordon Draves, with the Sierra Club, will be leading a guided tour of Connally Nature Park this Saturday at 10:00 AM. I had the privilege to join Gordon on the same tour last year and highly recommend it. This is the time of year that the Pink Lady Slippers will be in bloom. Connally Nature Park is also home of a State Champion White Oak, meaning it’s one of the largest in Georgia.
Your venture is in a gently rolling area along a branch of Utoy Creek (downstream a few miles is the site of the Battle of Utoy Creek during the siege of Atlanta–1864).  This area was settled by the Connally family during the 1820’s.  The entire walk may be a mile in length, as you causally walk and view some of the plants including the pink ladyslippers, 8 new ferns and state champion white oak, wi… Continue Reading Guided Tour of Connally Nature Park this Saturday

Realtors® Call for Broad Qualified Mortgage Definition to Help Consumers and Housing Market

A narrow definition of the impending Ability to Repay regulation could harm consumers and the housing market recovery, according to the National Association of Realtors®.
In a letter sent today to Richard Cordray, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, NAR joined a broad coalition of lenders, investors, housing professionals, consumer advocates and civil rights groups to urge for a broadly defined Qualified Mortgage (QM) that covers a wide range of traditionally safe products and underwriting criteria.
“As the leading advocate for housing and homeownership, NAR supports a QM definition that establishes strong consumer protections, but promotes mortgage liquidity and affordability so that a wide range of creditworthy consumers will be able to find mortgage financing,” sa… Continue Reading Realtors® Call for Broad Qualified Mortgage Definition to Help Consumers and Housing Market

Transform Metro Atlanta

By now, if you own a television you’ve likely seen the commercial above regarding the July 31, 2012 Regional Transportation Referendum. This Referendum will put the future of Georgia’s transportation in the voters’ hands. the law divides the state into 12 regions for the purpose of voting on a one percent sales tax to fund transportation projects in that region. All revenues collected in a region stay in that region. In the Atlanta region, 15 percent of funds are sent directly to local governments to fund local transportation projects, while 85 percent of funds support a list of regional projects created by local elected officials, known as Regional Roundtables.
From a real estate perspective, passage of the referendum and construction of these projects will improve quality of life, c… Continue Reading Transform Metro Atlanta
